Nothing much fundamentally wrong with this one, it’s just in need of a thorough clean and setup. It’s not been used for quite some time but I believe it has significant sentimental value. The fretboard and frets were rather dirty, as was the rest of the guitar. A good scrub with 0000 grade steel wool […]

Taylor Setup
Taylor Setup Not something I would expect to have to do, a setup on a top end Taylor. A guitar setup is quite a personal thing though, so the standard factory setings may not suit everyone. The owner just wanted a slightly lower action. The neck had just a little more relief than I would […]
Gibson J45 Intonation problems
A lovely guitar, just has a couple of setup problems. The intonation on the B string wasn’t very good. The bridge saddle isn’t compensated, the top is rolled over in a straight line The neck relief was rather large. I don’t even need to measure it, I can see by eye there’s too much curve. […]
The Story of the Guitar Heroes
What a fantastic night out, watching The Story of the Guitar Heroes in the New Theatre Royal Lincoln. I’ve been struggling for more years than I care to remember to master the Guitar, I could practice for 25 hours a day for the next 200 years and I’ll still not achieve these levels! The playing […]
Fender Broken Headstock
Ouch! Bet that hurt…. Luckily it’s a clean break, along the grain and the parts fit together well. The veneer on the face of the head has kept it together. The guy taped it back together to keep it in place which is good. If you ever do break something like this it’s always best […]
Custom Build
I don’t quite know what to call this one, it started out as a fairly cheap second-hand Washburn, but I’m going to turn it into something rather special. So far I’ve pulled it apart, taken out all the electrics and taken the neck off. I bought a set of machine heads but might not use […]
Gretsch Fret Dress
Had a quiet week or so but back to work with a rather nice Gretsch Nothing much really wrong with it apart from a bit of buzzing around the 14th fret. Looking closely there were a few slightly high and some worn frets so a fret- dress should sort that out, (the black marks are […]
Gibson Flying V -5th Update
Got the wiring finished so all the bits and pieces back in place. Just one part missing, needed re-chroming which I really can’t do! Once that comes back all it’ll need is a new set of strings. To see the start of the project click here.
Gibson Flying V – 3rd update
Now that the glue has dried I can refit the pickups to drill the new holes. I’ve used cotton in place of the E-strings to make sure the location is right. Holes drilled and pickups installed. I’ve left a slight gap between the bridge pickup and the pickguard otherwise the hole for pickup would be visible […]
Gibson Flying V – 2nd update
I’ve started to fit the new parts but found another problem The pickups have been changed at some point and the holes for the pickup rings aren’t quite in the right place and they don’t quite sit squarely. The neck pickup isn’t too bad but the bridge pickup will have to be moved. I’ve filled […]
