Fender Jazz Bass – Replacement Neck

A strange one this, the top of the neck has quite a crack in it.  I tried to glue and clamp it but the crack must go right through.  When I tried to tighten the truss-rod it didn’t pull the neck into shape, it’s just opening up the split.  Sadly it’s beyond my skills to repair so we went for a new replacement neck…

The old neck (top) and the new one (bottom).

The surface of the fretboard was surprisingly rough and dry so I gave it a rub down with 0000 grade steel wool,

and a lick of Lemon Oil.

With the new neck fitted it needs a full setup, starting with the neck relief.

It just needed a small adjustment on the truss-rod.

Next the string action height at the 12th fret,

starting with the outside strings,

and then the A and D strings to match the fretboard radius.

As it’s brand new the nut slots need to be cut down to the correct depth to set the playing action at the first fret.

Then the intonation and lastly the pickup heights and it’s done.

Playing nicely again….

For similar repairs, or anything else just drop me a line or give me a call.
