Jazzmaster – Shielding and Pickup swap

Need to improve the sound of your guitar?  How about a new set of pickups and shield the pickup cavity to stop any unwanted hum while you’re at it…

The inside of the Jazzmaster must be about as complicated as they come.  However, a one-for-one pickup swap should be easy.

Before the new pickups go in I’m going to shield the inside of the pickup cavity….

Before….

After..

To complete, what is effectively a Faraday Cage, It’s also important to mask the back of the pick-guard…

With that done time to put it back together, with the new pickups.

One of the downsides of these necks is that you can’t get to the truss-rod nut with the neck installed.  I took it off while I was putting in the shielding to make that easier, knowing I’d have to take it off later anyway.  So bolt it on to the neck jig and re-string to tension.

That way I can set the neck relief exactly without having to keep taking the neck off to adjust it.

With the neck back on and the strings re-fitted the next step is to check the action at the 12th fret

by adjusting the bridge posts.

With the outside strings set then the rest to match the radius of the fretboard.

Lastly for the action, double check the action at the first fret.

and a check of the intonation.

With new pickups now it’s important to check their heights.

And there is is good to go, sounding great with no background humms or buzzes…..
