Nice guitar but It’s got some problems. Probably been there from new, but now I’m going to put it all right…
The first problem is the Intonation. No matter what the owner did it just didn’t sound right all the way up and down the neck.Looking at the nut the slot for the bass E and the A strings are just too wide. The string was able to vibrate right up to the point where it’s clamped. effectively it’s as if the nut’s about 2 or 3mm out of place.
The tremolo needs a little TLC. It could do with a bit of a clean which will perhaps help it stay in tune a little better.
One of the biggest problems are the frets. They’re not entirely level and are “buzzing” here and there. It’s a more common problem than you may think but can be quite easily fixed.
I tapped up the fretboard to protect it and marked the fret-tops with a marker pen. As I started to grind down the frets you can see where the high spots have been ground down but the low spots haven’t been touched. You can also see the worn spots.
And there we go the tops absolutely level.
Since the tops are flat each fret now needs to be rounded off again. With the frets now level and the right shape each one now needs to be re-polished.
That’s the frets done…
Next I had a look at that Floyd Rose. Apart from a couple of odd screws I couldn’t really see anything wrong with it, so I just pulled it apart and gave it a good clean…
It was sitting flat on the body anyway which makes up the setup easier.
Back to the nut. To get the string to sit nicely I put a shim under the nut to raise it up a little.
then I put a shallow slot into the nut…
Now the string will only vibrate from the front face of the nut..
With all that done all it needed was a standard setup and it’s good to go. Better than it was when it was new…
