If you need a new bone nut, but want a black one, how about Water Buffalo Horn? It’s not quite as tough as bone but it’s the best natural substance I’ve come across.
This Bass needs a new one just because it’s broken.
I’ve not got any pre-shaped ones so I’m going to have to cut it from a blank.
It was just about the right thickness, just a little long.
Gently rounding off the corners all I need to do now is polish it and cut the string slots.
The action was really high so while the strings were off I thought I’d sort that out. The bridge saddles were as low as they can go so I needed to reset the neck angle with a shim.
Once the neck was back on and flattened out a little the action was now a little low, I can dial that out by bringing the bridge up.
Back the nut, now it’s time to cut the slots down to the right depth.
So there it is. A Water Buffalo Horn nut. Works just as well on a Guitar as a Bass.
Plays a lot better as well now.
