A great looking guitar, just not playing at all well. I didn’t really need to measure the action, more like a step-ladder to reach it!
Yeh, that’s possibly the highest action I’ve ever seen, even on a Bass.
The bridge saddles were quite low though, and those pickups are rather close to the strings.
While I’m at it the owner want’s a new neck plate, with a Fender “F”. I may well need to fit a shim to adjust the neck angle so I’ll use that when I put the screws back.
But first that neck action. Way too much neck set for a start, once I drop that down things should look a lot better. You could drive a coach and horses under there!!!
A turn or two (or three) on the truss-rod should sort that out…
With it about right, before I fitted the new strings (and neck plate)….
I gave the frertboard a bit of a rub down…
and a spot of lemon-oil.
So with the new strings fitted, a double check of the neck set…
Just a little tweek…..
Next the action at the 12th fret. Still a little high…
So drop the “E” and “G” strings down a little first…
followed by the other 2, matching the radius of the fretboard.
With the action at the bottom right, it’s time to look at the top with the action at the 1st fret. Actually about bang on.
With the playing action right I lastly need to check the intonation..
With the guitar playing nicely a quick look at the pickups. They were actually so high that they were pulling the strings down and putting it out of tune so I’d already lowered them quite a bit. Now I just need to make sure the outputs are balanced and equal.
There it goes, playing every bit as well as it looks. And you’ve just got to just love that custom pick-guard!
