Duesenberg 49er – Fret dress and setup

I think this is a great guitar, well it could, and will be.  Sadly they’ve let themselves down with the detail.  Nothing that can’t be fixed, but it’s something that shouldn’t need doing.

While I’m at it I’ll tidy up a couple of other problems.  It’s seen some action so the frets are a little worn…SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAAs they are a little uneven, a fret-dress will sort both problems in one.SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAThe fretboard needs a good clean as well (I’ve seen worse).SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAFirst mask up the fretboard and start levelling the fret tops.  You can see the low points where the levelling beam isn’t touching…SANYO DIGITAL CAMERACarry on until everything is reduced to the lowest point…SANYO DIGITAL CAMERANow the frets are even, but have flat tops, I’ll need to round each one off again.  I’ve started the 1st fret…SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAand this is it almost done…SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA

Once they’ve all been re-shaped they all need polishing with 4 grades of micromesh.SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA

and oil it again with lemon-oil.SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA

then the right thickness..SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAWith the blank fitting nicely I marked up the string slots..SANYO DIGITAL CAMERASANYO DIGITAL CAMERAWith the strings in place and at tension I can work out how deep to cut each slot..SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAand complete a full setup…staring with the set in the neck…SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAIt was a little flat so I slackened off the truss-rod a little.SANYO DIGITAL CAMERALastly the action height and intonation and it’s done.SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAThere we go, Nice…SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA
