Want to improve on your Epiphone Les Paul? A good set of pickups has to be the starting point. While you’re at the pickups, a new set electrics to match isn’t a bad idea.
A nice new set of Radioshop Pickups and wiring harness to match.
There’s nothing specifically wrong with the existings volume and tone controls, but better quality parts will give more accurate control and better quality capacitors will improve the tone.
The old pots’, to come out.
Out with the old…
There’s also the problem of the metric vs imperial pots. US spec’ CTS pots have slightly wider shafts so the hols are slightly too narrow.
Reaming out the holes isn’t difficult though.
In with the new, a pre-wired harness from six string supplies.
Of course, not only are the outer shafts slightly bigger but so are the shafts for the knobs. The old shafts also have 18 splines rather than 24 on the new CTS pots. Need a new set of knobs to match the new pots’.
Classic mirror knobs, they look cool.
Looking good so far.
There is another change that can improve the tone, change the plastic nut for a bone one.
It does help with sustain and gives a crisper tone.
And there is is, sounding fantastic.
