Fender Sonoran fret dress and setup

These are great little guitars.  This one is brand new but the owner want’s to see what I can do to improve it.  Since there isn’t really anything wrong with it I guess the devil is in the detail as they say.

The neck has slightly too much set in it so that’ll be easy to fix with a tweek of the truss-rod.

Looking at the frets there are one or two slightly high ones.  Nothing drastic but if I’m to get a really good setup I’ll need to level them off.

I don’t need to go too far but it’s not worth trying to chase one high fret, that can just move the problem.  The only way to sort it is to dress them all.

The finish on the fret-board is a little rough so I’ll give it a polish up with some steel wool.

And as it’s a little dry some lemon oil.

The action height at the bottom of the neck is going to be easy to sort as the neck angle is adjustable at the joint.  You can see the head of the bolt…

To adjust it all I need to do is slacken the two retaining bolts a little a give the adjuster bolt a turn or two.  However, before that I need to get the neck and strings back on.

The playing action at the 12th fret is nice now.

The action height at the first fret is just a little high, more on the Bass side than the Treble…..

So take the slots down just a little.

with all that done it now plays really nicely, not that it was bad to start with!
