A rather nice guitar, but with room for improvement.
I’ve had this guitar in the workshop before but we couldn’t quite get the intonation properly adjusted as there wasn’t enough space to move the saddles far enough.
The nut is also plastic, so while we’re upgrading the bridge, I’ll cut and fit a bone one.
Trouble is the nut is just a little wider than any pre-cut ones I have so I had to cut one from a large generic blank.
I normally start by cutting it roughly to the right length.
But it’s also slightly too thick.
only by about half a mm…
Getting it perfectly square is a bit of an art mind you….
Fits nicely…
Next the end, Since the head flares out a little the end of the nut needs to do the same, so back to the grinding wheel, at slight angle…
The same with the other end, to get the angle and length just right.
Next the top, it needs a curve at around the right height so I copy the old nut.
That’s the nut shaped and fitted, just needs the slots cutting.
Starting with the gap between the outside of the “E” strings and the side of the neck.
And then the other 4 strings using a string spacing rule…
Now the new bridge and a new set of strings….
Fully adjustable so now I should be able to get the intonation right.
With the correct curvature in the neck set I set the outside string heights, measured at the 12th fret.
The beauty of this bridge is that I can adjust the height of each saddle independently, to match the radius across the fretboard.
With the bridge set at the right height, it’s time to cut the nut slots down to the right depth.
Measured at the first fret.
Lastly the intonation and it’s ready to go..
What a great little guitar. Plays really nicely now…
For anything similar or anything else for that matter just give me a call.
I purchased my Hofner Club re-issue guitar simply because it looked so good!
Thanks to George’s exceptional craftsmanship my club has gone from a hang on the wall guitar to a guitar l can hardly put down!
George’s nut is a work of art and his action, bridge, and intonation improvements have now made this guitar a joy to play. l can now fully enjoy Hofner’s beautiful jazzy vintage tones in tune!!!
I would like to thank George and my buddy for highly recommending him 👍
