Jim Harley, Fret Dress and Refurb

I’ve got quite a soft spot for Jim Harley Guitars, you don’t see many around but they make quite a wide range of gear.  I’ve got one myself.  This one is a nice piece of wood, it’s just in need of a little TLC.

The first problem is it just doesn’t work, no output at all.  I found one loose wire so hopefully it’ll be a quick fix

The Floyd Rose Trem’ was also rather gummed up, this guitar hasn’t been used for a while.  The first thing I did was to pull the Trem’ apart to clean and oil all the screws and springs.

The frets aren’t too badly worn but they are a little uneven so the owner has gone for a fret dress, it’ll make it play so much better.

Before putting it back together there is that electrical problem..  Turns out it wasn’t just a loose wire.  The jack socket had a short in it so needed to be replaced.  The owner also mentioned that the jack socket was loose and could I tighten it up.  Well I tried but with the shape of the cutout inside that was never going to happen….

With the angle on the inside the nut will never sit flush and so will always work loose..  The pencil line indicates where the cover sits so there is plenty of wood to work with….

I cut a little away and now it fits nicely, should stay put.  Once the wiring was back in place it all worked fine.  Re-fit the cover and she’s good to go
