Milan IV Bass – Setup

This one’s been sitting around for a while, so needs a bit of work to get back into a good playing condition.  The machine head posts were quite corroded so that seemed like a good place to start.

That’s better..

Next the fretboard, a good cleanup to remove a few years worth of dirt.

and then some lemon oil to bring back the finish.

With the strings back on it just needs a setup to get it playing nicely.  To start with the neck had way too much curve in it….

so I tightened up the truss-rod.

The action at the 12th fret was also rather high…

The trouble is the bridge saddles are already fully down.  The only way to sort that out is to reset the neck angle at the body.

so I took the neck off and put a couple of shims in the neck pocket.

The heel of the neck is a little higher but at least it’ll be playable.

now I can set the saddles to give me the right action height up at the 12th fret.

With the outside “E” and “G” strings set I matched the other heights to the curvature of the fretboard.

The action up at the 1st fret was OK.

but the intonation was way off…

Lastly the pickup heights, to ensure the outputs are balanced.

That’s better, out of retirement.
