Samick – Fret dress and setup

A nice looking guitar, sadly the build quality has rather let it down. The first problem was a dodgy volume control, a little intermittent. I was going to replace it but once I got the wiring out I found a dry joint.  I would say it was an easier fix but the biggest problem is getting the pots in and out.F-02The biggest problem though was the neck, the fretboard isn’t remotely flat, it’s all over the place!  It’s not so bad that I need to pull the frets and level the fretboard, a fret-dress should sort it.     F-04

You can see here, as I started to grind the frets down, the first 2 frets have hardly been touched, neither have the 8, 9th and 10th.  I had to take it a bit more than I would have liked, particularly on an almost new guitar!F-06

Once I got them level next I rounded off the fret tops.F-07

and re-polished them.F-08

A spot of lemon oil on the fretboard.F-09

Follow it up with a standard 5 point setup, including, the action at the 12th fret…f-11

by lowering the bridge…f-12

The action at the 1st fret…f-13

The Intonation…f-15

and the pickup heights..f-16

And there it goes….f-17
