Snap Dragon, folding guitar – Setup

Here’s something unusual, a folding travel guitar.  I’ve never come across one of these before.  I’ve seen some folding guitars before, but never one that really seems to work.  Getting the folding joint right, so that it snaps into place accurately is a real problem, but these people have cracked it.  Unfortunately the playing action is just way too low.  Too much to pack it out with a shim so I’m going to make a new saddle.

That’s how it folds..

and that’s it ready to play.

The neck relief is a little low.

so a gentle tweek of the truss-rod

The real problem is the action higher up the neck.  way too low…

The only way to sort that out is to replace the bridge saddle with a taller one.

I’m going to use the original as a template.

Starting by getting the blank down to the rough size.

It’s just a little thick so a gentle shave down on the wheel.

That’s about right.

Then get the ends squared off.

Then get the shape, the curve on the top.

With the saddle the right profile I put a slant across the top, to help with the intonation.

And there it is.

Plays nicely now.
