Why don’t acoustic guitars only have one strap button?
I’ve never really thought about it, I guess I don’t play my acoustic very much, and if I do I’m sitting down. I’ve just been asked to fit one as the owner doesn’t like the strap tied off at the end of the neck. The obvious problem is where on the heel do you mount one?
The best spot has to be on the underside of the heel of the neck. It’ll hold the weight the best and the guitar will hang nicely. If I’m going to drill into the heel of the neck I need to make sure there are no bolts holding the neck in place, I don’t want to hit one of those with my drill!
Looks OK. So where exactly, the strap needs to sit evenly and neatly around the heel.
Having decided exactly where to drill I marked up the tape. The tape is there to make sure the drill doesn’t slip and to protect the surface of the guitar while I’m working on it.
Start the hole with a small bradawl so that the drill cuts without slipping.
Make sure the drill bit is the right size and tape it to make sure I don’t drill the hole any deeper than necessary.
It’s probably best to check at this point that the screw isn’t going to be too long.
That’s going to be OK so carefully drill the hole..
Remove the tape, and screw in the button. For fine woodwork like this I find add a little candle wax to the screw thread to help it into place.
Not forgetting a felt washer behind the button.
There we go.
