Telecaster Custom – Volume fix

I’ve never really been a fan of these but to see a 70s guitar like this is nice.

The owner wasn’t happy as the bridge pickup was just too much when on 10.  I’ve never really come across such a request but he was right, it just had too much of an edge to it, beyond that nice tele jangle to a quite a harsh sound.  He found it frustrating and fiddley to never take the volume past 9.  I tried lowering the pickup to see if that helped, but not much so I added a small resistor to the top of the volume pot’ so when set at 9 you still only get about 90-95 of the max volume.

The pickup switch was a little intermittent so I gave the contacts a bit of a clean and squirt of switch cleaner in the pots while it was apart.  Apart from a bit of a clean and polish that’s all it needed.

A comment from the owner:

“Well, it was a brave move to ask for a slight modification to an original 1974 Telecaster but the bridge pickup on full was just too thin sounding with a unpleasant high pitch.

George’s little resistor mod and an electronics clean-up coupled with a fretboard and fret clean has transformed the playing experience for me. What was once a guitar I’d only play for short periods it was put through a 3hr band rehearsal with no issues at all. Sometimes it’s the little things that make a big difference!”
