Vintage SG – New nut, setup and service

Some of these “Vintage” guitars can be quite good.  For some reason the nut slots on this one have been cut rather deep and the open strings are buzzing a little.  There are quick fixes but the proper thing to do is to replace the nut.

f-01

Gently out with the old one.

f-02

The new bone one will sound better as well.  The slot needs a little tidying up first though.

f-03

While I’m at it the neck could do with a good clean as well.

f-04

Some “0000” steel wool will see to that.

f-05

And some Lemon Oil to bring some life back to the wood.

f-06

With a new strings all it needs now is full setup…

f-07

Starting with the neck set.  It was a little high so the truss-rod needed tightening just a bit.

f-08

Having taken the bridge off I must have disturbed the posts while I was cleaning the body as the action at the 12th fret was huge.  I don’t remember it being that high before!

f-09

Just drop the bridge down.

f-10

Back at the new nut the action was also huge.

f-11

So file each slot down until I get a decent action at the first fret.

f-12

That’s much better.

f-13

The only now is the top of the nut is rather tall..

f-14 f-15

So I took a lump off the top.

f-16

That’s much better.

f-17

With the playing action about right the intonation will need a check.

f-18

And to finish it off the pickup heights.

f-19

The jack socket was a little loose so while I had the back off to tighten that up I gave it a good clean, along with the pots’.

f-20

And there it is.  Ready for action again….
