Here’s a very attractive guitar, lovely piece of wood. Had a couple of requests with this one, both easy to sort but one a little more unusual. The owner would prefer just one set of volume and tone controls, rather than a set for each pickup?
It’s got standard wiring so it’s an easy enough job, just re-arranging the wiring a little.
Before: well almost, I’ve disconnected the bridge pickup and switch input already.
After: I’ve left the other pots in place, it’d be very difficult to hide the holes and would look a little odd. It’ll also be easy to return it to standard again later if wanted.
Part 2, a bone nut. That’s the old one..
The blank’s way too large so it’ll need quite some work.
Taking a lump off the end for a start..
Next I need to get it to the right thickness so it fits the old slot.
and then it’s length.
All it needs then is a slope on the back edge…..
A small spot of glue and it’s ready for strings..
Before I do that however, a good clean…
and a little lemon oil.
and that’s where the strings need to go. At this point I’ll cut some shallow slots and sort out the depths properly once the rest of the setup’s been done..
So a 5 point setup,
No.1 The neck set…
A little too much so tighten the truss-rod a shade.
No.2 The Action at the 12th fret.
again, a little high so lower the bridge slightly.
No.3 The action at the 1st fret. This was way too high because of the new nut so it needs some more work..
cutting each slot down to give it the appropriate action.
No.4 The intonation.
No.5 The pickup heights. More critical than ever since both pickups now work off the same volume control. They need to have the same output levels.
And there it is, good to go.
