I rather fancy one of these, This one needed quite a bit of sorting out though…
The string break angle over the bridge looks a little extreme to me, but I can sort that out when I get it back together and complete the setup.
The frets have got some worn spots….
and are a little uneven as well. A fret dress will sort both problems out.
The bridge was round the wrong way as well.
Before I can do that I need to remove the nut. The trouble is with Gibsons is they paint the necks with the nuts already fitted, so If you’re not careful you can damage the finish.
Before doing anything it’s important to get the neck completely flat.
With it flat I taped it up to protect the surface.
Start the grinding…….
You can see as I started where the low points are, where the black pen has been left.
There we go, down to a common level.
With the frets levelled they need rounding of again.
and then re-polished.
With the frets done the fret-board needs a good clean.
and oil…
With that done all it needs is a 5 point setup.
No.1 The neck set…
No.2 The action at the 12th fret. Since the bridge has been off it was always going to be a guess. It came out a little high…
so lower the bridge a little.
No.3 The action at the 1st fret. That was about right.
No.4 The intonation. Since I’ve flipped the bridge round it certainly needed sorting. At least the strings fit the slots now.
Lastly the pickup heights. It’s got a couple of very different pickups so really I need to plug it in and listen to it.
There is goes. Now it plays as good as it looks.
