Now that’s a worn set of frets! Might just get away with dressing them, but then they would be very very low..
Rather than that, I’m going to replace them with new ones.Out with the old…Putting a slight bend into the new fret-wire.
Gently tap the new wire into place…
and trim the spare end.
Next file the ends level with the side of the neck..
and a 45 degree angle…
With the frets roughly finished each one now needs finishing off individually to get rid of any sharp edges.
It’s almost impossible to fit the new frets completely evenly so they need to be dressed, so tape up the fretboard to protect it and adjust the truss-rod to make sure it’s flat.
Using the level beam grinding the fret-tops down to the lowest common point.
Once level each fret top needs rounding off again…
and then re-polishing with 4 grades of micromesh-cloth.
With the neck done all I need to do is re-fit it and complete a standard setup…
First the neck set…with a tweek of the truss-rod..
The action at the 12th fret..
by adjusting the bridge height..
With the outside strings done next adjust the others to match the radius of the fretoard…
Then the action at the 1st fret…
While I was at it I also adjusted the trem’ which was sitting rather low…That’s better..Lastly check out the intonation and pickup heights and it’s good to go…
