Martin – Intonation problem

Nice guitars these, usually much better than this, but the Intonation was rather badly out in this one.

There didn’t seem to be any real reason for it so I started off with a new, compensated, bone saddle…SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAIt sorted out most of the problem, but not quite the Bass “E”.  Next I widened out the saddle slot and put in another piece of bone, effectively moving the saddle for the “E” string another couple of mm further back.  Problem solved!SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA

While the strings were off, fixing one problem, the owner decided to go the whole way and sort out all the other niggling problems.  Actually the only problem is one of wear and tear, the frets are a little worn.

So with the neck flat, grind the tops down to the lowest common level.SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA

You can see here, as I started to file the frets down, the worn low spots..

With the tops level, re-crown each one to round the frets again…..SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAand re-polish…SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAWhile the strings are off I also gave the fretboard a good clean and oil.

Next I replaced the nut.  It’s one of the easiest ways of improving the tone of any guitar, particularly an acoustic.  I used a large blank as I didn’t have one already shaped.SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA

First thing is to get it to the right thickness and length…SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA

then shape the top and cut the string slots, not too deeply though, I’ll do that as a part of the setup.SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAThere we go, old and new…SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAOnce the new nut’s in place, carry out a standard setup…

There it goes, ready for action again. SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA
