A nice new guitar. They can be good guitars but, sadly, they don’t seem to have the time to set them up properly in the factory. They just need a little work to make the most of them.
While I’m at it the owner wants all the protective plastic removing, not actually as easy as you would think, especially from around all the screw heads.
The next, most obvious problem is the tremolo. It’s a nice two post trem’ but it’s sitting flat on the body? You can only bend notes down not up? Whoever thought that was OK?It also only had 2 of the 3 springs fitted so before I started I put the third spring in.
With the trem’ set I’ll complete a standard 5 point setup…
No1: Neck set, Just a quick tweek of the truss-rod.No.2: The action at the 12th fret. It’s easy on this one, the bridge is mounted on two posts.Just to make sure I did check that the individual heights match the radius of the fret-board.No. 3: The action at the 1st fret. This is a one shot fix, with a nut file cut the slots deeper, if you go too far the nut will have to be replaced.
No.4: The intonation (The position of the bridge along the string).
No. 5: The pickup heights. I start with a standard figure but the only way to do it properly is to plug it in and listen too it. I want to make sure the Bass and Treble sides are balanced and the individual pickups give an equal output. There we go, much better.
