What a lovely piece of wood, a really great looking guitar.
It’s got a couple of problems, mostly just setup, but the neck isn’t on straight either. Since the truss-rod adjustment is on the heel of the neck I’ll have to take it off anyway.
I don’t need to measure that with a feeler gauge, I don’t think I’ve got any thick enough for that matter, you could get a coach and horses under there!
It’s got some nice touches though. I really like the plate across the back securing the string balls.
Anyway, with the neck off I can mount it on the neck jig. That way I can fit a set of strings at full tension and still get to the adjustment screw. Saves having to take the neck on and off several times.
That’s much better.
With the neck back on, this time lined up properly, all it needs is a standard setup.
The neck set’s now fine but since I dropped it down by quite a bit the bridge needs to come up quite a bit, starting with the outside “E” strings.
That’s about right.
Once the “E” strings are set, the others need to be brought up to match the radius of the fretboard.
Back up at the top end the action was about right, just a shade high so I just chassed out each slot to make sure it matched the string gauges…..
and added some grease in each slot. There was a bit of a problem with some strings sticking a little so this should help.
Next the Intonation. It’s always a compromise with three way tele’ saddles but this one came out quite nicely.
Lastly the pickup heights. Always just a starting point. As it goes once I plugged it in the neck pickup was particularly quiet and out of balance with the bridge so I brought it up a bit.
There is goes, ready to rock.
A word or to from the owner:
“I’d bought this guitar on line because it looked great and I knew the build quality to be excellent. I’ve owned quite a few high end guitars over many years, so know what feels right and this one felt very WRONG!
Robin Hood would have been proud of the bow in the neck and I knew it was a job for an expert.
I keyed in “guitar repairs in Lincolnshire” on my computer and found George, who turned out to be an unassuming guy with the ability to quickly diagnose and fix the problems at an agreed price and within his estimated time frame.
George has transformed this beautiful but unplayable gee-tar into a musical instrument to treasure.
My grateful thanks to a top guitar technician”.
