A rather lovely guitar, in need of a little bit of work to get it playing properly though.
A lovely piece of wood.
Some of the frets are rather uneven. Big fat frets with some very low points, so it’s going to be quite a bit of work.
There’s quite a bit of wear and tear too. I’ve seen worse, a fret dress will sort out all those problems.
Important to get the neck absolutely flat before starting.
Using the level beam to achieve a datum.
You can see hear, as I started off, just how low some of the low points are. The 2 frets on the right have had a lot taken off their tops yet the one in the middle hasn’t been touched.
Once the tops are even, it’s time to round them off again.
With these jumbo frets its a long job. The one on the left is done, the one in the middle is half way there and the ones on the right are still to go.
Once they’re rounded off each one needs polishing up again.
Once that’s done a bit of a clean and oil for the fretboard.
There were a couple of other problems. The jack socket’s a little intermittent. Rather than muck about trying to clean it, it’s better to just replace it.
and give the electrics a clean.
The machine heads were also a little loose, so tighten them up a little…
All it needs now is a set of strings and a setup. That truss-rod adjustment’s going to be difficult though. It’s hidden on the heel of the neck and that pickup’s right in the way.
Unfortunately the neck had too much of a curve so I had to attack that truss-rod.
The only way to get at it is to remove the strings and the neck pickup and put the strings back.
Next the action at the 12th fret. Rather high.
so down with the bridge.
and the action back at the 1st fret. Just a little high.
so cut the slots a little deeper.
Then the intonation, to make sure it sounds in tune all the way up the neck.
Lastly the pickup heights.
There she goes, better than new.
