A nice little guitar. The trouble is they’re built to a budged, seemingly without much care. However I’m going to make this one play really nicely. While I’m at it I’ve been asked to fit a TUSQ nut. Not something I like to be honest, but I’ll stick it on and see how it works. First, out with the old one and clean up the slot.
With the neck off, level it, tape it up and mark the fret tops.
As I star grinding you can see the low points, which haven’t been touched yet.
Once the tops are even I just need to round them off again.
With the frets round and even, just need to polish them up again. With the neck done I gave it a little lemon-oil.That new nut. Should be exactly the right size…Unfortunately it’s not, for a start It’s lust a little long…but also not quite tall enough. The new one is on the left. That’s not a huge problem and with it back together, it all just needs setting up.
First the neck set…A little high so a tweek on the truss-rod…The action at the 12th fret is also a little high…so drop the bridge by a shade…Next the action at the 1st fret. Here lies the problem with the low nut, the action is way too low. The only way to deal with that is to fit a ship underneath it to raise it up.With it high enough a couple of the slots need to be dropped just a little.Lastly double check the pickup heights to ensure the outputs are equal.
It’s got a really interesting tremolo as well. A bolt on extra, no extra work needed.
