Epiphone Les-Paul – Fret dress and Nut

A nice little guitar.  The trouble is they’re built to a budged, seemingly without much care.  However I’m going to make this one play really nicely.  While I’m at it I’ve been asked to fit a TUSQ nut.  Not something I like to be honest, but I’ll stick it on and see how it works.  First, out with the old one and clean up the slot.SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA

With the neck off, level it, tape it up and mark the fret tops.

Once the tops are even I just need to round them off again.SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA

With the frets round and even, just need to polish them up again.SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAWith the neck done I gave it a little lemon-oil.SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAThat new nut. Should be exactly the right size…SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAUnfortunately it’s not, for a start It’s lust a little long…SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAbut also not quite tall enough.  The new one is on the left.SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAThat’s not a huge problem and with it back together, it all just needs setting up.

First the neck set…SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAA little high so a tweek on the truss-rod…SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAThe action at the 12th fret is also a little high…SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAso drop the bridge by a shade…SANYO DIGITAL CAMERANext the action at the 1st fret.  Here lies the problem with the low nut, the action is way too low.  The only way to deal with that is to fit a ship underneath it to raise it up.SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAWith it high enough a couple of the slots need to be dropped just a little.SANYO DIGITAL CAMERALastly double check the pickup heights to ensure the outputs are equal.SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA

It’s got a really interesting tremolo as well.  A bolt on extra, no extra work needed.

There we are, ready to go…SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA
